SOFIA MARTINEZ – WRITER | FILMMAKER |
Sofia (Sof) Martinez is a trans non-binary, Latino writer from Austin, Texas, passionate about telling stories about LGBT characters and storylines. Their upcoming short film, Staged, starring Golden Globe Nominee Elsie Fisher, is currently in post-production and is expected to be distributed in 2025. While still in high school, Sofia wrote and directed a feature-length film based on their experience with inpatient treatment for an eating disorder. That film, May I Be at Peace, is currently available on Amazon Prime Video. Through its creation, Sofia shared their recovery journey and formed connections that brought them into the Austin film community.
These early relationships led to opportunities on a range of productions, including Fear the Walking Dead and Robert Rodriguez’s We Can Be Heroes, before Sofia relocated to Los Angeles in 2019. There, they continued their work as a production assistant on acclaimed projects such as Barry, For All Mankind, Big Shot, Hacks, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and more.
During the pandemic, Sofia pursued a degree at Bennington College, where they graduated in June 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Mathematics. (Bennington Convocation Speaker 2024 at 27:24.) At Bennington, they developed a strong interest in narrative structure, ethics in emerging technologies, and educational leadership. Sofia served as President of the Student Educational Policies Committee, co-taught first-year forums, was the prose editor for Silo Magazine, and interned at the Calligraph literary agency in New York City. They currently work as an assistant to award winning writer and director Emil Weinstein.
